The 'Sun King' with the  Palace of Versailles in the background, into which he moved the court and government in 1682 making it the de facto capital of France.  He reigned for an astounding 72 years and 110 days.  born 1638, died 1715 

An older Louis - Louis Hébert, born 1575 in Paris, died 1627 in Quebec City - was the first French apothecary in the New World.  The stamp, designed by Clermont Malenfant, shows Louis surrounded by objects of his trade, including a mortar and pestle as well as a sprig of balsam fir and silverweed, both useful as herbal medicines.

Movember started in Australia in 2003. In 2007, Canada, the UK, and Spain joined the fun charity. There are now 22 countries participating, with over 1250 men's health projects funded.

We have had a snow storm this week and now everything is covered in white. I eagerly await spring and some fresh green leaves.

This low value stamp featuring a simple head shot of the Queen also has a tree in the top left corner. Each stamp of this series had a symbol representing some sector of the economy - in this case, forestry. Apparently, in 1960, 48% of Canada's land mass was covered in forest. It seems we are down to 38% by 2020.

In these portraits the Queen Mum does manage to look stylish

This Madonna and Child, titled Our Lady of the Night, is a wood sculpture by Antonio Caruso who was inspired by the baby Jesus sleeping in his mother's arms. "Mary's tender embrace, as the child rests safely, reminds us how children feel protected by their mothers in the darkness of night."

Today is Mother's Day in Canada and the US which I understand was celebrated in Spain last Sunday.

For Ana in North Macedonia, it was March 8th. Maybe next year I will remember when Mothering Sunday is in time for a mother theme.

Alexandra's wedding attire included a Honiton lace veil designed by her grandfather, Prince Albert, which had been worn by her mother, Princess Alice. She also wore the traditional Romanov nuptial crown and a 475 carat necklace that had belonged to Catherine the Great.

One may wonder what is going through the minds of Queen Elizabeth and King George VI as they posed for this anniversary picture. They seem to have the same expression; perhaps sending telepathic messages to each other...

I cannot find if they ever actually visited Trinidad, though Prince Edward did visit in 1920 as did his father, George V, as a child in 1880. The current Queen Elizabeth visited for the first time in 1966.

Celebrating the Royal Silver Wedding of George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

The Republic of The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa and is surrounded almost entirely by Senegal with a coastline in the Atlantic. It is a long, narrow country that borders the Gambia River. It lies between latitudes 13° and 14°N and longitudes 13° and 17°W. It's only one of two countries whose short form of its name begins with 'The'.

This issue of six stamps featuring Queen Elizabeth based on a photograph by Dorothy Wilding replaced the five (1¢ to 5¢) issues from 1953 based on a photograph by Yousuf Karsh. (those stamps replaced the King George issues which were also based on a Wilding photograph). Dorothy Wilding (1893-1976) was considered one of Britain's most successful portrait photographers.

The Dutch Antilles was established as a country in 1954 and was dissolved in 2010. It was a former constituent country of The Netherlands though all the islands that formed the Netherlands Antilles remain part of the Netherlands, but the legal status of each island differs. This stamp shows Queen Juliana, who of course, comes from the House of Orange. She reigned from 1948 - 1980.

Empress Elisabeth, nicknamed 'Sisi', was born in Bavaria and married Franz Josef I at age 16. She was not well suited to court life and had an extremely interfering mother-in-law, which did not help. Her major political achievement was contributing to the Austo-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, and that was mostly because she retreated to Hungary for solace and an escape from Vienna. For the most part, she had no control in her life as Empress, but what she could control - and did so, obsessively - was her physical appearance and her beauty. She was a tall woman (5'8") and weighed around 110lbs. With the aid of exercises, fasting and corsets she emphasized her slender figure and 19" waist. Her chestnut hair fell to her knees when let loose and took 2-3 hours of care daily. This portrait, by Francis Xaver Winterhalter, was made in 1894 when Sisi was 27 years old and is said to have been Franz Josef's favourite.

featuring Queen Victoria who was reigning in 1848 when Responsible Government was introduced and King George VI who was reigning in 1948 during the 100th anniversary.

Queen Victoria was born on May 24th 1819  (Canada celebrates with a holiday on the Monday before the 24th of May).  She would be 196 years old were she still alive.
