sand dunes

My apologies for not posting this on Thursday.  All is well now, but I had a bit of a health issue which put me out of commission for a couple of days.

wonders of travel

Is there a more dramatic arrival to anywhere? In this case Princess Juliana Airport in Sint Maarten with its one runway and planes flying low over Maho Beach

or a more space agey piece of LAX than this Theme Building

or more elegant than this wonder of Victorian engineering

pass

I am glad I was in Venice several decades ago before all the current craziness.  Fighting through massive crowds of tourists and selfie sticks to see the beauty of this city does not feel like it would be enjoyable.  Plus, the charm of local culture is gone.

this is as crowded as I feel comfortable with (1910s)
And, even without the current political climate, I have never wanted to go to Florida.  I even turned down an offer of free accommodation from some friends who had a condo they used during the winter.  I would rather have spent time exploring the states I'd have to drive through to get there than spend time in Daytona.

They do have a dizzying array of linen postcards, though.

I could also include Disney World - or any of the Disney theme parks - in my list of places I'd not like to visit.
I'd rather visit a theme park that is unique to country you find it in.

magic by the lake

The Edgewater Beach Hotel, with a private beach, opened 1916, demolished 1971.  On the far right are the pink hued apartments (still standing) which complemented the yellow hued hotel.

highs and lows

A December getaway on a calm beach in Aruba, one of the islands in the Netherlands Antilles

Whereas Aruba is mostly flat, a little further south you can find these 1,000 metre high cliffs at Mount Roraima in northwestern Brazil (as well as Guyana and Venezuela)

a retro travel poster postcard with a cute teardrop trailer

cars are allowed on Sauble Beach, though they seem to be off this postcard
instead we have some 60s era bathing suits
A typical scene, on the wide, white, sandy shores of SAUBLE BEACH — the Daytona of Canada on Lake Huron. Noted for its fine bathing facilities, and seven mile long sand beach.  Won't you join us? — the water's warm, too! Ample accommodations are available at Modern Lodges, Motels, Cottages, and Cabins.

Sunday Stamps - 'S'

2012, Lithuania, World Heritage Objects, Curonian Spit

The Kursiu Nerija, or Curonian Spit, has the largest rolling sand dunes in Europe.  It is 98 km long and  varies from 400 metres to 4 kms wide with the Curonian Lagoon on east side and the Baltic Sea on the west.  It has been a UNESCO Heritage Site since 2000 shared by Lithuania and Russia.

The U.S. Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean, consist of three main islands - St Croix, St John, St Thomas, as well as a few uninhabited outlying islands. In 1956 The Virgin Islands National Park was established and covers 60% of St John and a portion of St Thomas. Of the 146,888 acres, 5,650 are underwater. This stamp shows Trunk Bay, which has consistently been named as one of the top beaches in the world. The name comes from the leatherback turtle which are known locally as trunks.

Sunday Stamps II - 35

issued in 2011 for Travel in Taiwan under the theme of Celebrations/Greetings.
designed by Lin Hsiao-han
This is Kenting, 'a hot tourist destination in the summer. Lazily sunbathing under the blue sky or sitting under an umbrella is a perfect way to enjoy a hot summer day on the beach' (ChunghwaPost)
Kenting is a National Park, established in 1984 and is Taiwan's oldest and most southern national park. It is well known for its tropical climate and sunshine, scenic mountain and beach.

And by the time you read this I will be off to a beach (not one in Taiwan where it is monsoon season anyway) and will be offline for a few days. So I'll visit you all at your summer theme when we get back.

sandy beach

sent Jul 22, 1910 Norfolk, Virginia to Paris, Ontario

Out for a time
while enjoying the sun and we are thinking of you.
Uncle Sam and Aunt Alice

No-one here is going to get sunburnt shoulders.
There are plenty of people wearing black, which seems an odd choice for a hot summer's day!

The Ocean View Resort on Chesapeake Bay is about eight miles from the city. It had a good hotel, fine bathing and fishing, and many thousands frequented it between May and September. Little open car trains ran back and forth every hour from the city during the season.
