Most of the major European River Cruises dock at this Austrian village, although this is one of the regional day trip cruises.  Due to the now low water levels of the Danube, cruises will likely be limited.

It is always exciting when the first green leaves start popping up

but having a permanent green liveried tram would help get you in the mood for spring

then again, you could immerse yourself in the green of a canal cruise in the Ardennes

In Granada, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, is perhaps the most famous example of Islamic architecture.  It was originally a small fortress (1258-1358), but was significantly rebuilt after 1492 and used as a palace.

I have never been to Chattanooga, and have no idea what these buildings would be in this 1940s postcard showing the city center and the Tennessee River and Lookout Mountain.  It's official nickname is the "Scenic City".

Construction began on the St Lawrence Seaway in 1954 and was completed in 1959.  

A series of locks, of which the St Lambert in Montreal is the first, allow for ships to travel between the Atlantic and the Great Lakes

For all of my life, I have always lived near water - in many cases within walking distance of a lake, a creek, canal, river, or a pond.  I cannot imagine living somewhere without a body of water,  but I also cannot imagine going through some of the cataclysmic flooding such water can bring.  Any floods near me have been, well, not devastating.

I am fortunate to live near Niagara Falls.  And it's fortunate that I really like it there.  Sure, there is a bit of tacky touristy hell there, but the falls themselves are magnificent and I will happily drive past them at any time of the year.  Especially in winter.

Oceans are okay, though with the latest tsunami threats in the Pacific, I'd be happier on a calm cruise in Estonia.

Rivers in a city are especially attractive as they provide an opportunity for bridges.  I have been known to go miles out of my way for a waterfall or bridge.  (I've been to Milford Sound, but not Prague)

Colorado River doing its best incised meander.  The rock is Navajo Sandstone and the drop to the river is 1,000 feet.  The best time to visit - and see the colours - is at sunrise or sunset. 

60 million years ago, this land was relatively flat, then about 5.5 million years ago geological forces pushed the land upwards.  A couple hundred miles away is the Rainbow Bridge, also of Navajo Sandstone.  What makes this a bridge rather than an arch is that it was formed from water cutting through sandstone.

 The St Lawrence Seaway is a system of locks, canals and channels that allows for ocean going ships to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the western end of Lake Superior, a distance of 3,750 kms. The Canadian stamp shows a compressed view of the 15 locks with the seven on the right on the St Lawrence River, the Welland Canal in the middle, and the Great Lakes and the locks at Sault Ste Marie on Lake Superior. The Old Port of Montreal is between the St Lawrence River and Old Montreal. This stamp shows a 2002 image with a corner of Habitat 67, a modular residential complex designed by Moshe Safdie for Expo 67 on the right. The Old Port is a neighbourhood full of activities from shopping, eating, river cruises, entertainment, festivals and more.

Zavikon Island, 1000 Islands Canada

The 1000 Islands are an archipelago of some 1800 islands that straddle the border between Ontario and New York in the St lawrence River. It has been an enduring myth that this 32' bridge between the main Zavikon island and the one used as a backyard by the owner of the two has the bigger one in Canada and the smaller one in the U.S. It has been a great tourist ploy since around 1880 and is still touted as the shortest international  bridge on boat tours. Apparently, the official border is a couple hundred feet south of the smaller island making both of them in Canada.

The American (foreground) with Bridal Veil (the single fall just beyond the American) are completely on the US side of the border. Horseshoe (background) is mostly within Canada with only a small portion of the north east corner in the US. The Niagara River flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, and while the falls aren't exceptionally high, they are very wide at over 3,400 feet from the extreme American side to the extreme Canadian side.

1000 Islands, Ontario, Canada - New York, U.S.A. : in April 1959, traffic began using the St Lawrence Seaway. The seaway, in the broadest sense, is a huge waterway extending 2,300 miles from the Atlantic ocean to the head of the Great Lakes in the heart of North America.
