The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Centre has been predominantly a Norway spruce, with a couple of Balsam firs or White spruces, since the first tree went up in 1933.  Because of the narrow streets, the tree is limited to a height of 100'.   It usually goes up in mid November, with the lighting ceremony this year on December 3rd.

The tree  on the facade of the art deco Radio City Music Hall usually arrives in mid-October.  There are 57,000 individual LED lights in "red and warm white programmed to create soft  movement such as waves and fades"

Borkum is an island in northwestern Germany.  This Great Lighthouse is still in use after 145 years.  At 60 metres tall it is a landfall light for the Ems estuary and a day marker for the port of Emdem.

Elblag was established in 1237, and the Market Gate tower shown here is the only part of the original city wall (from 1315) left standing. Much of the city was destroyed in WWII and is still being rebuilt.

The Wasserschloss - a moated castle in Hamburg's warehouse district. It was originally accommodation and a workshop for dockworkers but is now a commercial building.

Lockwood.  Flat Lake is part of the one million acre river swamp of the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest contiguous river swamp in the US. Appropriately, Atchafalaya derives from Choctaw meaning "long river".

The stamp was issued for the 200th anniversary of statehood.

A 16th century Eastern Orthodox monastery in Sucevita, Romania, with murals painted both inside and outside. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Painted Churches of Moldova.

Sunday Stamps II - C

2016, Russia, commemorative, joint issue

Russia and Slovenia issued this stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Chapel below Vrsic. In 1915, a Prisoner of War camp was opened near the present borders of Slovenia, Austria and Italy. Most of the POWs were Russian soldiers who were given the job of building a road across the Vrsic Pass. On March 12, 1916 a group of prisoners were clearing the road of snow when an avalanche killed more than 500 people. Local Slovenians buried the dead in a mass grave and to honour them, the remaining prisoners built a small wooden chapel at the site.

Photographer Art Wolfe described this shot as "perfectly backlit bison standing on a small rise in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley". It was taken at dawn on a cold winter's night in February, 2000.  This was the last of the 16 Forever stamps issued this year in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service. Yellowstone became a National Park in 1872 as the first national park in the US (it is also considered as possibly the first in the world) and previous to 1916 was managed by the US Army. The free ranging bison herd is the oldest and largest public bison herd in the States. Mostly in Wyoming, the park (and, presumably, the bison) also extends into Montana and Idaho.
