cricket

The young boy who sent this card on Postcrossing was an avid cricket fan. Admittedly, it is not a sport I follow or know much about, so I tried some research...  still don't quite get all the rules and terms.

The 'DREAM11' is actually a fantasy sports platform that has now lost the sponsorship after the Indian government recently banned real-money online gaming.

The 'Gandhi cap' was favoured by Nehru (1889-1964), India's first Prime Minister. Gandhi wanted a cap that could cover his head in hot weather and be easily folded to fit in a pocket.  It is made of homespun cotton.

The Puneri Pagadi, here worn by Lokmanya Tilak, is a distinctive style of turban considered a symbol of pride and honour in the city of Pune. It was given a Geographical Indication tag as the intellectual property of Pune in 2009. It is made of strips of red satin.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920), also known as Lokmanya, was called "the maker of modern India" by Gandhi. Whatever else he thought about India as "my Motherland and my Goddess, the people in India as my kith and kin, and loyal and steadfast work for their social emancipation is my highest duty", he was strongly opposed to any women's rights and social reforms against caste.

Sunday Stamps II - 146

1947, India International Postage
12 annas

One of three stamps issued by the newly independent Dominion of India. It wouldn't be until December that they were finally released, and the stock of old King George VI stamps would continue to be overprinted until they were finally used up and replaced in 1949. The stamp shows a Douglas DC4 Skymaster flying over the date of independence with the value of 12 annas on the bottom left and Jai Hind (Victory to India) in Devanagari script on the upper left.
