This week, I'm starting a new series on the Great Lakes starting with  the most contentious name

Ontario is an indigenous word from the Huron-Wendat meaning variously "sparkling water" or "great lake".  It has been in use since at least 1640 by the settlers and from people who lived here for over 1,000 years.  Names matter

Rochester, the largest U.S. city on the shores of Lake Ontario, has a few issues with "Lake America"...

Charlotte is a neighbourhood in Rochester on the southern shore of Lake Ontario.

Watkins Glen State Park is in the Finger Lakes region of New York.  A two mile hike will take you past 19 waterfalls.  Here are four of them.  Altogether there are 832 staircase steps, which should give you a good workout.

a broken heart

Construction began on Boldt Castle in 1900 at the bidding of millionaire hotel magnet George C. Boldt as a tribute to his beloved wife Louise. Boldt Castle was designed as their summer dream home on the St Lawrence River in the heart of the 1000 Islands. However it was not to be, Mrs Boldt passed away suddenly just months before the completion of the castle. Mr Boldt was inconsolable and immediately stopped all construction on Heart Island, leaving the property vacant for over seventy years.

America's town square, Midtown Plaza mall in Rochester NY with its animated Clock of the Nations, tropical plantings, entrances to stores, shops and services. The mall is the centre of the 7 1/2 acre Midtown Plaza, the nation's largest downtown business and shopping complex under one roof.

Opened to great fanfare in 1962 and demolished in 2010

I distinctly remember visiting here, probably within the first year of its opening, so as a five year old. A souvenir model of the clock of nations was treasured for years.

One of the great features of the American Falls are the multitude of rocks at the bottom. They started as natural rockslides but in 1969 with concerns about too much erosion, the water was shut off so that geological engineers could investigate and stabilize the rockbed. They decided to keep the fallen rocks in place.

There was talk of shutting off the falls again in 2019 in order to repair the bridges to Goat Island, but that was delayed due to lack of funds.

Grand Island

Both of these bridges were opened in 1935 and are operated by the New York State thruway. The bridges extend I-90 over the Niagara River to Grand Island from Niagara Falls to the north and from Tonawanda (a suburb of Buffalo) to the south. Grand Island is the largest island along the Niagara River. The North Bridge is 4,000' in length with the South Bridge slightly shorter, at 3,400'. The South Bridge is undeniably much prettier. In 1963 a nearly identical bridge was built alongside as a northbound span with the older bridge becoming a two lane southbound span.

Statler

The Statler Hotels were founded by E. M. Statler, with the first one being built in Buffalo, New York (the first major hotel with running water and a private bath in every room). This card shows the second Hotel Statler that was built in 1923 and closed in 1984 although the ballrooms remained in use for catered events. It became the Statler Hilton in 1954 and some of the hotel rooms converted to offices by 1948 by the time WBEN Channel 4 had their television studios on the 18th floor. I seem to remember staying here as a child in the mid 60's and being excited that we were so close to the Saturday Night Dance Party that was still televised from the ballroom.  A failed renovation left the building abandonned and into bankruptcy and it might have been doomed for demolision had not a private developer took over in 2011 and it is now known as Statler City, a 'premier' wedding and event destination.

Operates daily at the Underwood Elliott Fisher Exhibit in the Business Systems and Insurance Building at the New York's World's Fair. This huge machine, weighing 14 tons, is 1,728 times larger than the regular Underwood Master. It required 3 years to build. Each typebar weighs 45 pounds and the carriage alone weighs 3,500 pounds. letters are typed on 'stationery' measuring 9 by 12 feet, and the ribbon in the machine is 100 feet long and five inches wide. two box cars were required to transport the Giant to the World's Fair.
