patient care

The Mayo Clinic has been around in one form or another since 1864.  The hospital grew out of a series of devastating tornadoes in 1893.  At the time there were only three hospitals in Minnesota and none were near Rochester.  Enter William Mayo and his sons, all doctors, who led a partnership that ultimately resulted in one of the best hospitals in the world.
This building was built in 1914 and the Kahler Hotel was opened in 1921 as a hybrid hotel and hospital as the beginnings of the Mayo Clinic.

three swans

Dating back to 1517, this former coaching inn in the town of Market Harborough was chosen by King Charles I as a rest stop on his way to the Battle of Naseby in 1645 during the Civil War (he lost)

It is still in use today as a Hotel and Wedding Venue.  You can read more about it here, and see its updated decor and menu (and book a room if you so wish)

I'm participating in NaBloPoMo This is day 4 of 30.  Check out the other bloggers and join in!

elegance of brown

Brown is the least preferred colour of autumn, and yet that was expected to be the more predominant one this year due to our very dry, hot summer.  So, here is a more elegant Brown.

The Brown Palace Hotel located in the heart of downtown Denver has been offering old world elegance to travelers, business people and celebrities since 1892.
It boasts one of the first atrium style lobbies which rises eight stories with balconies of cast iron railings and ornate grillwork.
Afternoon Tea in the Grand lobby is a cherished tradition that continues to this day ($65 and up)

pass

I am glad I was in Venice several decades ago before all the current craziness.  Fighting through massive crowds of tourists and selfie sticks to see the beauty of this city does not feel like it would be enjoyable.  Plus, the charm of local culture is gone.

this is as crowded as I feel comfortable with (1910s)
And, even without the current political climate, I have never wanted to go to Florida.  I even turned down an offer of free accommodation from some friends who had a condo they used during the winter.  I would rather have spent time exploring the states I'd have to drive through to get there than spend time in Daytona.

They do have a dizzying array of linen postcards, though.

I could also include Disney World - or any of the Disney theme parks - in my list of places I'd not like to visit.
I'd rather visit a theme park that is unique to country you find it in.

The Edgewater Beach Hotel, with a private beach, opened 1916, demolished 1971.  On the far right are the pink hued apartments (still standing) which complemented the yellow hued hotel.

hydropathic

This was filed under hospitals, and with a name like "Waverley Hydropathic" that sounds a reasonable assumption. But, with a little research, it turns out this is actually a hotel with a golf course. First mentioned in 1905.

I even accidentally bought two!

It is now a bespoke hotel. Guests enjoy wonderful views of the Eildon Hills, with plenty of opportunities for walks down to the River Tweed. Waverley Castle Hotel, Melrose is the ideal place to unwind, rejuvenate and explore a historic and fascinating area of Scotland, 38 miles south of Edinburgh and close to the border with England.

The hotel has 77 comfortable, well-appointed bedrooms, with facilities such as a flat-screen TV, en-suite bathroom, hairdryer, desk and housekeeping services. Choose from a range of single, double and twin rooms. Larger rooms are also available on request.

a winter resort

The first luxury hotel built in The Bahamas. Built by the government in 1861, it closed in 1971. Destroyed by fire, and later demolished, most of the grounds are now a parking lot.  It did have a storied history involving bootleggers during prohibition.

KGB

Hotel Viru, Tallin
Built in 1972 and the first high rise building in Estonia. From this angle, those two towers look awfully close together giving the whole thing a look of a double headboard and a bed.
In the Soviet era "any hotel that was appropriate for foreign visitors had to be appropriate to the KGB"
So this is also now a home to a KGB Museum.
