lake superior
this name is from the French le lac supérieur meaning "upper lake" because it is higher and upstream from Lake Huron. the Ojibwe name is Gitchegami (or gitche gumee) which means "big water'' or ''great sea"
I think many of us remember our elementary school days when we learned about Gitche Gumee and the "wigwam of Nokomis". I am so glad Google fixed the glitch that kept a lot of people from commenting! I as afraid it was just me and my computer.
