The Gastown Steam Clock was installed in the 1970s to cover up one of the vents of the downtown steam heating system. The steam powers the winding mechanism, and it plays the Westminster Chimes every hour when tourists flock to catch the puffs of steam.
The clocks did their annual 'fall back' this weekend. I am still trying to sort out what time it really is.
A very clever use of the vent! Vancouver is one place I have been in Canada. British Columbia and Alberta, nothing further east. The clock in my car hasn't been changed yet (every year I forget how and my son has to do it!), so when I was out I was very confused stores weren't open yet!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how, with all those computer components in cars, the clocks can't be programmed to change automatically.
