Sunday Stamps - 'Q'

2006 Ireland, Quercus petraea

The Sessile Oak is the national tree of the Republic of Ireland. It can grow up to 130' (40 metres) and is native to most of Europe.  Apart from being a good source of wood fuel, the timber is also used for building, cabinetmaking and veneers.  The acorns are used to fatten grazing animals in the autumn.

  1. Quercus appears on several stamps, but this is the first time I've seen it on a Irish Stamp. I pass several of the trees in a local wood. They are truly magnificent.

  2. I knew Latin names would come in handy today but I was just too lazy to think... I guess I will have to make it up with the X :)))

Nice stamp - not sure if we have this kind of oak here.

  3. I love this kind of stams showing trees on a white background. They remind me the old botany books.

  4. This is a lovely stamp. Nice that it is square, which allows you to appreciate the shape of the tree.
