The flags of each province appear on this souvenir sheet in established order of precedence with the date written below the name. From left to right is Ontario; Quebec; Nova Scotia; New Brunswick; Manitoba; British Columbia; Prince Edward Island; Saskatchewan; Alberta; Newfoundland; Northwest Territories; Yukon Territory. A year after this issue, Newfoundland would have its own new flag; and twenty years later, in 1999, a new territory of Nunavut would be formed after the Northwest Territories was divided.

An interesting stamp sheet, which helps (at least me) to learn about the Canadian map/topography!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that in the flags of some provinces, similar to the Dutch skutcheon, a lion shows up. Didn't know that and I am always wondering why, what countries in the north have to do with big felines who even don't live (t)here :-)
There's also a lion in the current Spanish coat of arms, because of the former Kingdom of Leon.
DeleteThe lion seems to have been a symbol of bravery since medieval times. William the Lion, King of the Scots (1165-1214), and Richard the Lionheart, Richard I of England (1189-1199) started the whole thing.
