The Detroit Windsor Tunnel is the second busiest crossing between The US and Canada. The first is the Ambassador Bridge - which is also between Detroit and Windsor. The bridge was completed in 1929 and the tunnel in 1930. Construction took about 26 months and was completed almost a year ahead of schedule and cost $25 million.

  2. If the tunnel is really that well lit, I might be able to handle it. But even looking at the picture, I felt the ceiling & walls closing in . . . Funny thing, though - I felt as it I could walk through there without the same uncomfortable feeling as driving. I wonder why that would be?

  3. There were similar narrow tunnels in Norfolk, VA where I once lived and everyday a tunnel worker spent hours in a little booth at the bottom of the tunnel to monitor the traffic. And when was the last time any highway project was finished a year ahead of schedule?

  7. It looks remarkably empty for a vehicle tunnel. I don't imagine it's ever that empty today.

  9. Great postcard! It reminds me of some of the trippy "light show" shots from the end of "2001" where it looked like you were flying down a tunnel of starlight. (Which coincidentally segues into my post this week!)
