Built in1892, this high school had its last graduating class in 1972.
This was apparently the most popular building depicted on a postcard, with its 230' high clock tower and 10' diameter clock faces.
This is not anything like the high school I attended
(which was not immortalized on a post card, either).
It seems like a waste to put a tower like that on a school, though I do like the way it looks.

DeleteMy old high school (El Cerrito High in El Cerrito, CA) has since been torn down & completely rebuilt, but back was I was a student there, it was said to resemble the Shredded Wheat factory on boxes of Shredded Wheat, and it kind of did. Oh well. Maybe not so picturesque as Central High in Minn., but it had its charm.
ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing building for a high school, and my mind immediately thought, it must have been built for another purpose (city hall?) and then turned into a high school. Do you know if that happened?
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you say that, as I thought it was a city hall when I bought the card. But, on researching, it seems it was built as a school. I wish I knew how many students there were as it is a massive building!

ReplyDeleteVery handsome building, and not at all like my high school either. In fact, my high school was just torn down this month. Not sure what's going in its place.
